Train Travel question

I'm trying to decide what train passes I need as I have not done much train travel.
I am a senior if that matters. We will be in Switzerland for 8 days. We will be traveling from Zurich to Luzern, Murren, Interlaken, Zermatt areas etc. On the 8th day we will travel to Austria and be there 5 nights. On day 6 in Austria we will travel to Germany (Munich) for 2 nights. Should i buy an SBB pass for 8 days so that i can get free and discounted boats, and local transport etc in Switzerland and then buy a 7 day Global Eurorail pass for the remainder? Is that the best way? And since this isn't till next year do i wait and buy the passes on black Friday as i have heard they discount it?

Thanks for the help

It is not clear precisely which train JOURNEYS you will be making within Austria - or even where you plan to arrive in Austria from Switzerland.

I rather suspect that a Global Eurailpass will be a large waste of money.

Swiss Rail Pass: Maybe. (Disclaimer... I am no expert on Swiss Rail ticketing.)

It SOUNDS like you have four journeys within Switzerland, then a final journey through Switzerland into Austria (somewhere???) So maybe you are in the market for a Swiss travel pass "flex" for 4 days.

And for the journey to Austria, you might purchase a point-to-point ticket if the cost is less than buying a Swiss pass for 6 days (no 5-day pass is available.) One type of p2p ticket is the supersaver fare... details here:

You should do some comparisons between p2p ticket prices and the rail pass option, keeping in mind whatever savings you might get from the rail pass on boats, lifts, etc.

GERMANY: Will you start from Salzburg? If so, a simple day pass bought at Salzburg station will get you to Munich on the regional train: The Bavaria Ticket. If not.. p2p fares from any town in Austria to Munich can be found here...

Watch for posts here regarding STP sales. Someone with a sharp eye will spot the sale and post the announcement. This year's sale was a few weeks in May, so probably nothing until next year. Good luck.

Swiss passes can be confusing. My gut reaction to your plans is that you should buy a Swiss Half-Fare Card and a Berner Oberland Regional Pass, the latter being for the time you are in the Mürren/Lauterbrunnen/Interlaken area. The BO pass should be for the number of days you are there including arrival and departure days. It will “kick in” starting in Luzern on you way there and cover you to Brig on your way to Zermatt. https://www.berneroberlandpass.ch/de/all-in-1-ticket/

The Half Fare Card gives you half off all full fares and a.so a discount on the BO pass.

Zermatt to Innsbruck is going to be a long day on the trains, 7 1/2 hours at a minimum. You might think about going to the far point (Zermatt) straight from the airport. It is 3 1/2 hours and 1 or 2 changes. You'll be tired anyway, and it is a realxing journey. Then work your ay back to Berner Oberland and Luzern. Then it is a 4 1/2 hour journey with only one change in Zurich on the ay to Innsbruck.
