I too dropped my car in Orvieto last year and took the 75 minute ride into Rome. I got A Hertz car cheaper when the reservation went thru AutoEurope.com. The Hertz dealership was about 100 yards across the street and around the corner from the train station. Trains are regional and don't take reservations. They're also frequent.
Luggage? You can live out of a 21" rolling bag forever. And I don't carry any bags for anybody. Don't take anything you cannot carry 2 miles or more.

Judy, the Orvieto train station is a block and a half max from the Hertz rental car office. There is also a petrol station nearby. The trains will mostly be the local Regionale trains from Orvieto to Rome-Termini. Be sure to validate your ticket before boarding the train. You won't be laughing too much with your luggage as getting to the train requires that you go down an elevator walk to your platform and walk up about 25 stairs. You'll just love it. My wife just did exactly this from the Hertz office 2 weeks ago only she didn't have too much luggage. She packs a bit lighter than I do.

Lots of women travel light - I take a 21" carryon and a daypack for three months.
