Is there a way to purchase a single rail type travel pass for all trains and local buses/tubes for a family of 5 for above travel
Norman, not sure but doubt there is a family pass for the Eurostar,, have you gone on the eurostar.com website. What I do know is this, buy tickets well in advance ,, travel on tues, wed or thurs,, and stay over a sat night for cheapest tickets(can be as low as 40 or 50 euros). Booking for tickets starts 120 days before date of travel and first tickets are cheapest. .Travel 2nd class, its very nice, \play around with different times of travel to get cheapest prices. When you go on Eurostar site its best to enter UK as your home country. You can buy tickets to be picked up at station ,, just print out confirmation. I have done this 4 times.
Norman, I'm not aware of a single Railpass that will cover all trains and local buses/tubes. I believe you would need to buy a Pass in each city for each family member (ie: an Oyster Card or similar in London). Railpasses typically only provide a pass holder discount on EuroStar tickets, rather than covering the entire cost. You might find it helpful to download the free PDF Rail Guide from this website. Click on the "Railpasses" tab at the top of the page and then look in the lower right corner for the download link. One tip to mention...... The term "chunnel" is rarely used, so you'll probably find more information on it by using the "proper" term - "EuroStar". Good luck and happy travels!
You need 4 different tickets for you trip. - One for the airport-central London trip (don't fall for the trap of buying a travelcard 6 zones just to cover one trip from the airport) - London day/week passes loaded on an Oyster card. - A London-Paris Eurostar ticket ("chunnel" is not really known as a term there) - Paris day/week passes.
Check out www.seat61.com for all manner of tips for rail tickets in London, Paris, and the Eurostar. I'm pretty sure you can print out your Eurostar tickets at home. You can make a duplicate copy that way in case someone loses theirs.
I suggest you buy your Eurostar tickets as soon as you know your are going. Sometimes there is only one train per day that you can take to London/Paris. They fil up quickly. I made the mistake of starting to book the tickets on-line. I was told there were only a few seats left. I waited and the next day I barely got any seats and they cost $60 more per ticket.
I disagree that there is only one train from London to Paris or return. There are 16 trains both ways most days. Yes, book it as soon as you can tie down the date and time. Prices only go up, never down.
Even on a Wednesday in February, there are sixteen trains between London and Paris (and the same number coming back). It is true that early booking will get you a lower fare, but only three of tomorrows trains from London to Paris are currently sold out in Standard class. Just a little organisation should help you get a good deal at a time that suits.
