I will be traveling by train from Venice to Riomaggiore. What is the best route? Option 1) via Milan, Genoa 2) via Bologna, Parma, La Spezia 3) via Bologna, Florence, Pisa, La Spezia 4) Other???
Look it up on www.trenitalia.com
Just put in from: Venezia S. Lucia to: Riomaggiore and the desired time and date, and it will find you the quickest route
Just agreeing with what Chris has told you. Different trains will leave at different times, will take more or less time, have more or fewer changes, and cost differently so it's matter of picking the schedule/route/price which works for you.
Routes that travel through Florence with 2 connections tend to take about 5 hours, while routes through Milan with 2 connections are closer to 7 hours on current schedules, partly due to longer layovers at the connecting stations. I would choose based on schedule, over price, but also would not expect much price difference. Departures with 3 or 4 connections are last choice.
try also loco2 and goeuro.com, they have trenItalia and Italo.
mary,
The route through Florence is generally faster and easier, but involves several changes and different types of trains.
One of the easiest and quickest trips will be a departure from Venezia Santa Lucia at 10:25, arriving Riomaggiore at 15:33 (time 5H:08M, two changes at Firenze SMN and Sarzana, reservations compulsory on first segment via Freccia high speed, Regionale on next two segments so DON'T forget to validate tickets prior to boarding on the day of travel).
