train travel from venice to ingolstadt germany

I will be traveling from the Venice airport to Ingolstadt Germany. (I have to drop off the rental car at the airport prior to leaving Venice) I would like to know if it is possible to take a train from Mestre outside Venice to Ingolstadt and can I book that directly with the DB bahn website?

There is not one direct train. You will have to change in Munich, but you can book the complete ticket on the German Rail (Bahn) website. However, to use the Bahn website, you will have to take a train that goes directly from Venice Mestre to Munich. Most connections use an Italian train to Verona and a German train from there to Munich and are not bookable online. There is one night train that does that, CNL 358, and one day train, EC 86. EC 86 leaves Venice at 13:47, gets to Munich at 20:25. Using the Bahn website, you can book that train along with RE 4022 that gets to Ingolstadt at 21:55, all on one ticke, and get a discounted fare for advance purchase.

If you want to travel earlier in the day, book Venezia Mestre-Verona Porta Nuova on trenitalia.com. Book Verona Porta Nuova-Ingolstadt (one connection in Munich) on the German Rail site as noted by Lee. Use the German Rail site to get timetables for the entire route.

Getting to Inglostadt is basically a short regional train hop from Munich with trains leave from Munich to Ingolstadt 2-3x every hour in the peak daytime according to bahn.com. Make your best route to get from Venice to Munich and you can easily pick up a train to Ingolstadt. I am traveling in the opposite direction, from Kinding (just North of Ingolstadt) via Munich to Venice next week. http://seat61.com/Europe-train-tickets.htm
