Train travel from Schaffhausen Germany to Zurich

We are contemplating dropping our rental car in Schaffhausen Germany then taking a train to Zurich for our last night, before an early flight next morning, out of Zurich. I am trying to weigh the cost of train travel for 2 (and the amount of time spent traveling by train from Schaffuansen to Zurich), against the cost of overnight parking (30 SF) at the hotel, plus what I believe would be a substantional drop off fee if we drop the car at the Zurich airport, having rented it at the Munich airport. I am not good at interpreting these rail websites. Does anyone know what point to point tickets for 2 would cost between the two cities? Our Mariott hotel is next to the train station in Zurich.

Can I just check exactly which Schaffhausen you mean, because there is more than one. There is a Schaffhausen which is near the German border but is actually in Switzerland. Train fares from there to Zurich appear to be €15.20 each according to www.bahn.com. It's also on the Zurich S-Bahn, which will cost you CHF 26.60 each. The Schaffhausen in Germany is near Saarbrucken and the nearest station is Voklingen. From there to Zurich is over 5 hours on the train and involves a change in Mannheim. The standard fare is €100 or as low as €39 if you can buy far enough in advance.

The Schaffhausen that is on the Rhine River, just north of Zurich. Since it looked to be "surrounded" by Germany, I was hoping there would be a drop off point for the car there that was in Germany. I should have specified that I was also looking for a German town near there for the drop off,as well.

OK, you could look at Singen, which has Avis, Hertz, Sixt and Europcar, amongst others. Fares from there to Zurich are just above or just under €20 each, depending on whether you go direct or get the S-Bahn or other local train to Schaffhausen and change there.

Thanks! Singen is the town I was thinking of. I did this itinerary about 15 years ago but could not remember the name of the town we dropped the car at.
