Totally new at this...Looking for advice on how to travel by train from Scalea, Italy to Barry/Rhondda (Cardiff?), Wales and then on/back to Metheringham (Lincoln) UK, 4 days allowed for travel. Not sure if a rail pass would be advantageous or just point to point, and would possibly need one night train maybe, for time efficiency? Also not sure if we would need to book hotel rooms each night or could just wing it. Thanks!
That would be a heck of a long way to travel by train. I would suggest you need to travel to Naples and take an Easyjet flight to Bristol & that should cost around 100 Euros but varies widely depending on date. Easyjet fly Naples to Bristol on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and the flight time is 3 hours.
From Bristol Airport, I suggest you take a shuttle bus to Bristol Temple Meads rail station from where a train leaves every 30 minutes for Cardiff. (Cardiff would be the best place to stay and just use the local train network to reach Barry / Rhondda which are both about 30 minutes from Cardiff Central station with trains about every 20 minutes).
To get from Cardiff to Metheringham is about a 5 hour hour train journey and can be done either via London or via Birmingham.https://www.traintickets.com/?/ will tell you how to do this trip. Note that it will come up with Advance specific train tickets with ‘splits' to reduce the price.
A Eurail may be best for this. The journey planners say Day 1- travel Scalea at 9am to Zurich via Milan, night train Zurich to Koln;
Day 2- Koln to Brussels to London to Cardiff arrive around 5 pm
Day 3 Cardiff/ Rhondda
Day 4- to Metheringham.
