First you need to get from the airport to the train station in Rome - Termini. The airport train is the Leonard Express runs twice an hour. For Termini you will have a number of options to Salerno. Go to trenitalia.com for schedule options and pricing.

At the airport, follow signs for the train, the Leonardo Express, buy a ticket from the kiosk or Newsstand (cost last summer was 14 euro), validate it before boarding, and the train lets you off at Roma Termini. Then go to a ticket counter or kiosk to buy your ticket to Salerno (or buy 90 days in advance from the Trenitalia site). Note that if you buy a ticket for the fast train, you must take that specific train - your ticket will include a reserved seat and you do not have to validate this ticket. If you buy the ticket to Salerno when you arrive in Rome, you won't need to worry about missing your train and having to buy a full-fare replacement. Check RoninRome.com for step-by-step instructions and tons of info on trains in Italy.

Thanks so much. We are just planning our trip and there is so much to figure out. We are excited about seeing the Amalfi Coast. Thanks again.

There is no point in going to a ticket counter in Roma Termini to get a ticket to Salerno, you can do that on the ticket machines at the airport itself for both trains.
