Part of my vacation takes me to N.Wales, specifically Conwy(per Rick's suggestion in his book). I would like to go from Conwy to Edinburgh, however, after looking at the national rail website I see that i would have to change trains in York to get to Edinburgh. York is another city I plan to visit, but originally I had planned to go to Edinburgh then York then London to fly home. With this new knowledge of changing trains in York to get to Edinburgh should I just go to York, then Edinburgh and fly home from Edinburgh? Or should I go from Conwy to Edinbugh and take a side trip through another city, but what city? Any clarity or suggestions will help. Thanks so much!!
I'm surprised that you are getting routed through York - this takes you right across England to go north. What dates were you searching for? I wonder if you were getting re-routed due to engineering works?
To get anywhere from Conwy you'll need to change at Llandudno Junction; then the best way to get to Edinburgh will be to pick up the West Coast main line, so Chester, Warrington Bank Quay, somewhere like that.
If you want a stop Chester is nice, a smaller scale version of York with the most complete Roman city walls in the UK. You could also go via Manchester, not as twee and touristy as the other places mentioned but a vibrant slice of modern Britain.
Lot depends on where you fly from, I'd guess the cheapest flights will be london though.
North Wales -Edinboro via York seems an odd routing.
I found this website yesterday,

Works well.
You might also check the various railrover tickets, the Guardian did a feature on these last monday
Yorks worth 2 days.
Maybe take in the Settle-Carlise railway as part of the trip.
transportdirect , is also useful finding fares.
