Looking for the best way to travel from Munich to Vernazza. Would it be best to stop somewhere halfway? Also traveling from Vernazza to Venice by train. Best to go up through Milan?
The fastest way from Munich to Vernazza, according to the German Rail website, is over Brenner Pass in Austria to Verona, then via Bologna and Parma. You could go through Milan, but that would be a slight diversion. The trip, however, is 11 hours, so you probably want to break it up with a stop.
However, you would undoubtedly want to return from Venice via Brenner, so maybe you should consider going to Vernazza via Zurich and Milan. That route would take a couple hours longer but let you see some different scenery, and the stop in Milan would be on your route.
A lot might depend on whether you are you using a railpass or point-point tickets. Going through Zurich would require an additional country.
If it's more important to you to have more daylight hours for on-your-feet sightseeing than to be able to look out the window on an all-day ride, take the direct CNL night train from Munich to Florence, a EuroStar Italia train from Florence to La Spezia, and a regionale train from La Spezia to Vernazza. Leave Munich at 21:03 and arrive in Vernazza at 10:26. You'll also save the cost of a night in a hotel. You can see this route on the German Rail site given to you by Lee.
Again, use the German Rail site to see your route choices for Vernazza-Venezia Santa Lucia. They differ depending upon the time of day. Enter 04:00 as your departure time from Vernazza to see the earliest routes.
Thank you so much. This has helped a lot!
For your journey from Vernazza to Venice, you can go via Milan or you can take the 7:52am train out of La Spezia Centrale for Venice. It's a regionale train from La Spezia to Bologna where you change trains to a Eurostar for the ride into Venezia Santa Lucia. It's the quickest run of the day.
I don't know where you're going next but consider going from Munich to Venice to Vernazza. Venice is almost directly south of Munich, & you can take a fast train or an overnight train.
We were just in Munich, Venice, & Monterosso, & had a great time!
