Train travel from Munich, to Castle Tour, then to Salzburg

We are traveling with 2 children, 10 and 15 from March 16 to 28 in Bavaria, Austria, and Italy. We are planning 1 day at the castle(s) (Neuschwanstein, possibly Linderhof), departing Munich in the morning of March 19th but need to get to Salzburg that evening.

Can anyone recommend the best itinerary using trains for our family to visit the castles and still make it to Salzburg on the evening of the 19th.

Thanks.!

I really think you are trying to do to much. In order to spend 5 hours in Füssen and still get to Salzburg before 7 PM, you would have to leave Munich before 9 AM and use an ICE for the Munich to Salzburg leg. The fare for three of you (the youngest would be free) would be over €150. Normally I would recommend using a €27 Bayern-Ticket, but that requires using only regional trains. Even if you use an €18 MVV Gesamtnetz Parner Tageskarte to get to Geltendorf before 9 so you can use the Bayern-Ticket, you would only have about four hours in Füssen and wouldn't arrive in Salzburg until 8 PM. You might (?) get to see Hohenschwangau along with Neuschwanstein, but certainly not Linderhof.

Ok, good advice. Appreciate it. We have 7 day 1st class Eurail passes, so it would be better with this itinerary?

  1. Leave Munich before 9am, go to Füssen; is there an ICE there? What is the fastest way?

  2. Visit Neuschwanstein and, if we can, visit Hohenschwangau: assume a tour booked in advance would be best?

  3. Travel from Füssen to Salzburg: again, is there a faster train recommended?

The trains to and from Füssen are all regional trains. The ICE (InterCity Express) to which I referred is from Munich to Salzburg. You will have to go back through Munich to get to Salzburg by train. You can get train schedules at http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en. Put in Munich to Salzburg with "Fuessen Bahnhof" as the "via" and whatever time you want to leave Munich. Then adjust the time in Füssen and see what time you can get to Salzburg.
