Train Travel from Milan to Switzerland and onto Munich

Help! Trying to figure out how to travel cheaply with 4 adults by train from Milan to Bern, Switz., and finally to Munich. Spent all afternoon trying to figure out the trains and my head hurts.

Here is our possible travel plans:

  • Coming from the Cinque Terra region of Italy by rental car to Milan
    • Dropping rental car off and getting on train to Bern (perhaps and overnight train depending on length)
    • Renting a car in Bern and spending a couple days in the region
    • Take train to Munich to catch plane home.

We are traveling in early October 2009.

We don't have our heart set on Bern, although I haven't heard great things about Zurich. Want to see some amazing scenery in Switzerland, so maybe there is a better (cheaper) train option from Milan to somewhere in Switzerland.

Please help if you understand the train system. I'll be glad to answer any more questions if I left off important information.

Thank you!
