I am going to be traveling a little between a bike tour I am doing. I would travel from Basel Switzerland to Milan italy and then from Milan to Frankfurt to catch a palne home. Would there be any savings if I bought these tickests in advance?
And if so how would I do this? I was thinking paying as I go. I am sure of the days of travel but not the time of day for travel.

If you are willing to commit to a specific departure date and time, booking online in advance can save you quite a bit of money. The standard 2nd class fare for a direct EC train from Basel to Milano is 109.00 CHF. The best discount fare on the Swiss Rail site is 25.00 CHF. The standard 2nd class fare for Milano-Frankfurt with a connection in either Basel or Zurich is around €170.00. If you book well in advance (up to 92 days allowed) on the German Rail site, you can get a Europa-Spezial Italien fare as low as €43.50.
