train travel from Edinburgh to the Isle of Skye

Call us insane to travel to the Isle of Skye from Edinburgh, UK on Dec.16; but I am wondering where to get off. I haven't booked a hotel/B&B because I am unfamiliar with the area. Any suggestions on what city to go to and stay for a few days?

You will have to travel from Edinburgh to Mallaig by train, changing in Glasgow, and then take a ferry from Mallaig to Skye. Looking at the Calmac website you will need to leave Glasgow quite early so it may be better to spend the night there. The rail journey from Glasgow to Mallaig is one of Britain's most famously scenic so enjoy (if it isn't raining too hard to see out of the carriage window).

I wouldn't say anywhere in Skye qualifies as a "city". I would warn you that Scotland in December will be cold and more likely to be rainy than picturesquely snowy.
