You're talking 400 miles with The Alps right in the middle. And there are no airports closeby with flights between the two. Vienna-Venice is another such tough itinerary by train, and there are no budget flights.
Sometimes there are places that are just very difficult to get to without renting a car. And even then, it'd be a tough drive cross country.
