Train travel from Barcelona to Bolzano, Italy

My husband and I will be travelling in Europe in spring 2014. I know there are flights from Barcelona to Bolzano but would prefer train. Does anyone know the best route by train, even if it requires an overnight stay in another city? Bev Johnston

There are no flights from BCN to Bolzano. Bolzano has a very small airport where only certain aircrafts with short runway capabilities can fly. Currently only Darwing airlines operates 4 daily pairs with Rome FCO (in codeshare with Alitalia) with a SAAB 2000 aircraft. The closest bigger airport is Verona. However there are no non stop flights from BCN to VRN either. Relatively close to Bolzano are the following airports with direct service to BCN: Venice (VCE), Treviso (TSF), Milan (MXP or LIN), Bergamo (BGY), Bologna (BLQ), Munich (MUC). The train option is not very good from Barcelona. Too long with many changes. You could consider flying to one of the airports mentioned above, then take the train from there. You might save time and money. The fastest train option is over 22 hours with 5 changes. I can go to Bolzano from California faster than that.
