We are planning a trip from Milan to Tirano and then the Bern train to Chur.

Rick, The easiest and best method of travel from Milano to Tirano is the Regionale train that goes through Varenna. The trip to Varenna is 1H:03M and to Tirano is 2H:30M. Current second class fare is listed at €10.75. It's a very easy trip. I assume you're planning to take the Bernina Express? If so, I'm sure you'll enjoy it as it's a beautiful trip. Happy travels!
