We want to travel from Malaga, Spain to Bergen, Norway in October. We are thinking of getting a Eurail Global Pass. Is it possible to make the trip by train? About how long would it take if we travelled straight through? Thanks.
Find schedules for all over Europe on the German Rail (Bahn) website. Yes you can do it by train, but do you really want to. The fastest connection I can find takes 52 hours with 9 changes. But then when I went to college in the early 60s, I traveled cross-country by train, and it took about 65 hours.
But Lee, wasn't that back in the days of the steam engines?? lol
A flight would be faaaar cheaper than the train. The only reason I'd suggest taking the train is if you wanted to make stops along the way. And in that case a pass might be worth it since you might not stick to a schedule. But the TGV and Thalys don't offer many seats to pass holders, so even then it might not be worth it.
"wasn't that back in the days of the steam engines??" Not quite, but I do remember, when I was three, my mother took my older sister and I from Los Angeles to Kansas City on the train to visit her relatives, and then it was steam engines. I remember when the train went around a bend, looking forward and seeing those big steam locomotives, with their driving wheels.
Harry, I'd highly recommend travel by air on that route considering the distance. It appears that rail travel will be about 61 to 75 HOURS, with up to TEN changes. That is NOT a journey I'd want to make! One other thing to consider is that a Global Railpass does NOT include compulsory reservations, which are required by a number of trains on that route. You'll have to pay separately for those. A flight will not only be cheaper, but also MUCH faster. Two possibilities you could look at are Vueling (with a stop over in Barcelona) or EasyJet (with a stop over at London Gatwick). There are probably also direct flights with Scandinavian airlines, but I suspect they will be higher cost (I didn't check). Happy travels!
