How do I get from London to Chipping Campden via train or train/bus?
Unfortunately Chipping Campden is not served by rail, the only Cotswold town served by train is Moreton-on-Marsh. The Cotswolds are so well preserved, in part, because public transportation to and within this area has long been miserable. Without a car, to explore the Cotswolds use the 2 buses (aka "coaches" over there) that hop through the region nearly hourly, lacing together main stops and ending at rail stations (stations outside the Cotswolds except for Moreton). In each case, there are about 8 buses/day; the entire trip takes about an hour; you pay the driver directly as you board. With the help of the TI, you can lace together a one way or return trip by public transportation, with some effort and patience. If you're traveling mainly between two train stations, remember that the Cotswolds villages are generally pretty clueless when it comes to the needs of travelers without a car and have no baggage check services, so you'll need to improvise as to that. And remember that bus service is poor on Saturday and almost nonexistent Sunday.
See this page from the official Cotswold site. Use the Journey Planner at the National Rail site for train timetables and fares. For coach timetables and fares go to the National Express site.
Thank you so much for your quick reply. Traveling sure is hard work!
Nancy: You're exactly right, traveling in Europe is hard work. In England I use trains whenever possible but rent a car in the Cotswolds--if the cost and complications of a rental car are acceptable to you, it will greatly facilitate your seeing the Cotswolds.
