The Eurail information is making me bonkers. Does it cover the trains in Switzerland if we buy a travel pass that includes 3 connected countries? The plan Munich to Salzburg to Innsbruck to Bern to Zurich and back to Munich. Hoping to do day trips from Bern if we have good weather in December. Thanks for the assistance.
Yes, but there are a few fine points. Eurail pass does not cover trains in the Berner Oberland, except that you get a 25% discount on trains from Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald, Wengen, and Muerren.
Edit - Further on this. A 3 country Eurail Select Pass means you will have to go with a 1st class Pass. You say "we" so it must be at least 2 people. You don't say how many travel days you have planned, but I am going to take a stab and say 8 days, and I'm going to also guess you are over 27. The cost of an 8-day 2-person select pass for Germany, Austria, Switzerland is $1076.
Now your itinerary says you arrive in Munich and will go to Salzburg. Then through Austria to Switzerland and finally returning to Munich for your flight home. If you could just pay as you go in Germany, then you could get a 2-person 2nd class pass. An 8-day Austria-Switzerland pass is then $786. So the gross savings would be $290.
How much for the German legs? 31 EUR for a Bayern ticket will get 2 people to Salzburg leaving after 9 am on a weekday. 31 EUR for a Bayern ticket to get from Salzburg to Kufstein where the tracks cut through Germany. Finally to get from Lindau near the Swiss/Austria border to Munich is a 26 EUR Servus ticket when you use the direct ALX train. And about 8 EUR for the little nub of track in Germany between Bregenz and Lindau. That is 96 EUR, or about $115, so that nets out to $175 savings doing this way rather than including Germany in the pass.
