Train travel and hotels

Hi, we are planning our honeymoon to Europe in Fall 2010. Can anyone make any recommendations on what to do and not to do as well as hotels that are moderately priced and close to train stations since we will be lugging around our suite cases. We are planning to Fly into Berlin and start from there taking the train to Frankfurt, Munich, Somewhere in Switzerland, over to Venice and then to Rome. We've both been to Europe before but have never traveled via Train yet alone haul our luggage from Train to Hotel. Any help would be great!

Thanks
Jeff

Jeff, all travelers lug their luggage from the train to the hotels. What could be different is how much luggage you are lugging. If you have a lot (more than 1 roller bag and a small bag on top), you can expect to have a bit of fun not only getting on and off the trains but changing platforms when you change trains. That's one reason why it is advisable to travel light.

As for gettin to the hotel, you walk or take a taxi depending on how far the hotel is from the train station or how far you wish to walk with your luggage. My wife and I are both seniors and we don't have any big problems moving around with our luggage.

"...recommendations on what to do and not to do..."

I'm not entirely sure of the question, but I'm going to have to jump onto Larry's reply...

Traveling on trains - you're responsible for your luggage; there are no porters, etc. (Oh, OK - maybe you can find them in the larger stations, but I've never seen one). You CAN take a taxi to your hotel, but you may end up walking a bit to some hotels - lots of too-narrow lanes, construction, etc., keep taxis away. And there are NO taxis in Venice, for example.

And unless you're staying exclusively in hotels with elevators, lugging luggage gets very old. And staying close to train stations = looong walks to the center of the action in many cases.

What will you be doing, and exactly when will you be doing it? What is "moderately priced" to you?

How long is your trip?

We will be going in October and planning on staying in each city for 2 days. I think 100.00-150.00 per night is our comfort range for hotels.

Jeff - if you look at all at this site, the three messages that should come through loud and clear are "pack light", pack light", pack light"!

Lugging luggage is not fun, and you will have to lug it at some point. Venice is pedestrian with bridges that you climb up steps, cross the canal and then climb down to street level again. Take 4 or 5 days clothes and be prepared to wash them in the hotel sink - so make sure they are quick drying.

AS for hotels, check Rick's book, we have used it for over half of our accommodation in several trips to Europe.

If hauling around luggage is a concern... well, changing cities every two days, you're going to be doing a lot of that. You're also going to be spending A LOT of time in transit. Are you sure that you want your honeymoon to consist mostly of packing, waiting in a train station, riding a train for several hours (probably with multiple connections for some routes), hauling your luggage to a new hotel, unpacking again, etc? You might want to consider cutting several destinations.

Yep, a lot of good advice provided already, but I'll throw my two cents ( well 2.6 with inflation lol ) Take one carry on size bag each and that's it! I've travelled by train every time I've been over to Europe, and you will never get me to travel with more than one bag( did that my first trip and learned a valuable lesson lol ). You will haul your bags around a lot travelling by train so try Rick's suggestion. Pack your bags( whatever you're planning to take) and go "travelling" around your hometown for an hour...not driving or taxi, but actually hauling your luggage yourselves. That will help you decide what you feel is manageable for you...have a great honeymoon!

Tom's advice is right on the money. Is there some special reason that you want to see Frankfurt and some part of Switzerland? And how many days do you plan to spend overall from the day of arrival in Berlin? Without knowing the answers to those questions it is tough to give reasonable advice other than travel light.
Still, if it were me, I would consider either using a discount airline to fly Berlin-Rome and then come back north to a departure city like Milan, Zurich, or Munich OR going by train Berlin--Vienna--Salzburg--Verona--Venice--Rome. You don't mention whether you have Rick Steves' books for the relevant destinations--if not, get them right now...they contain a wealth of good hotel suggestions.
Congratulations on your marriage!

Is there some special reason that you want to see Frankfurt (We have friends that we are going to be visiting so Frankfurt is a over night trip otherwise we would have skipped it.)

and some part of Switzerland? (Ideally we would like to stay in a mountainous town where a train goes through.)

And how many days do you plan to spend overall from the day of arrival in Berlin? (We will be gone roughly 2 weeks and 1 day.)

I would consider either using a discount airline to fly Berlin-Rome (We have our air tickets already booked to fly into Berlin and out of Rome so it might be hard to change that.)

Thank you everyone for your advice, sounds like we need to pick up some books and pack light!

Jeff--OK, so you have 15 days in all. Taking Day 1 as arrival in Berlin and Day 15 as departure from Rome...really, given a reasonable amount to time to spend in each city plus your trip to Frankfurt (there is a direct Berlin-Frankfurt train that leaves about 9:30 & arrives just before 2 pm), you get something like this...
Day 1 thru 4, arrival and Berlin
Day 5 Berlin to Frankfurt by train, Frankfurt overnight
Days 6 to 10 open
Days 11-14 Rome and departure from Rome for US, Day 15

So essentially you have 5 days to get from Frankfurt to Rome. Lee or Tim can give you detailed rail suggestions, but in general I would think you could do Frankfurt to Bern-Interlaken for alpine walks and views, then Bern to Milan and finally Milan to Rome in that Day 6-10 time frame without having to rush.
