looking for some advice on travel from Lauterbrunnen Switzerland to Aix en Provence France.
has anyone travelled this route, do you need to pre purchase tickets via the train?

You do not have to buy ahead, although the last leg from Mulhouse or Lyon will be by TGV and you can save a little money on that leg with an advance purchase ticket. It is an all day trip, taking at least 8 hours and 3 to 4 train changes.
