train travel

What do you have to do if you are taking the train from Paris to Milan and have to change trains in Geneva? Are there 2 stations? What is the layout?

Generally when you change trains it is just like changing airplanes. You get off the train at one platform and find the correct platform for the next train. Often your ticket will indicate the platform, if not, there will be an announcement board in the station or near the tracks showing the arr and dpt trains. And sometimes it is as simply as get off the train, that train leaves, and the next train is yours. That is fairly common in small stations. At the track.platform there will be signage that indicates the next train, the stops it makes, and the train number. It would be unusually to change stations. That might happen in very large cities with several train stations but your ticket will indicate that.

There are two stations in Geneva but only one is used by main line services. You will definitely be changing within the same station.

Barbara, IN GENERAL, just be careful when making reservations, etc. - Geneva = Geneve in Europe, and Genoa = Genova in Europe......! (on this trip, you shouldn't have any trouble; you'd have to go to Milan first to actually get to Genova...) Just in case you're traveling around those parts again...those names look an awful lot alike on a train schedule board or out on the platforms...I've seen a train at the Milan station platform to 'GENOVA' immediately followed by a train to 'GENEVE'...Careful!
