We(2 Sr Citizens) are traveling in August from Munich to Vienna. Three days later Vienna to Lauterbrunnen and finally after several days to Geneva. Any suggestions as to passes etc. or websites?
You can use the German train website Bahn.de to figure out all of it, or crosscheck with the Swiss one Rail.ch. The journey from Vienna to Lauterbrunnen is a long one, 10 hours 40 minutes at least. Do you really want to do that in one day? You could break it up with a stop along the way, perhaps at Innsbruck. Or you could take a night train from Vienna to Zürich and complete the journey to Lauterbrunnen the next morning.
Thank you. This will be a great help.
One of the routes I see is Vienna to Passau to Regensburg to Nürnberg to Würzburg to Karlsruhe, etc. If you make the stopover any of these German cities, say Würzburg, you could get Europa-Spezial tickets from the German Rail website for Vienna to Würzburg and Würzburg to Lauterbrunnen. If you book far enough ahead, each of these legs could be as low as €39 per person.
I agree with the stopover idea ~ but I'd also definitely toss in Salzburg and Fuessen (Neuschwanstein) ~ having those two unforgettable stops along the way, each so low key and worthwhile, will make this trip all the more memorable and relaxing. Also, I have stayed in Lauterbrunnen once and Wengen (a little further up) twice ~ the difference in the view/quaintness of village is definitely worth going on up to Wengen!!!! Also makes going to the Jungfrau (a MUST do) easier from Wengen. Good for you both for leading by example that Sr. Citizens can/do embrace adventure!! ; )
