Train travel

Am going to Italy in June. Plan on traveling by train. For discounts how far in advance do I have to reserve tickets? Is 2-3 days in advance good enough? Hoping to reserve tickets while in Italy.

For the really good discounts, no. They go on sale 90 days out and the "Supereconomy" sell out rather quickly. Nonetheless, regional trains are cheap and unreserved, so they work good for visiting the surrounding area. For long distance on popular routes, there are lots of trains, so you can pick an non busy time and usually find an economy fare. Check both Trenitalia and Italo Train, new competitor in high speed trains.
