Train travel

My wife and I are going to be in Garmisch Partenkirchen in September. The official Octoberfest parade begins at 10:00 a.m. in Munich on Sept. 22. It's about 60-70 miles from the Edelweiss hotel we are staying in. We will have a rental car but my wife is a little bit leery of driving, traffic, parking, etc. for this parade as we have not done it before. Does anyone have any information about taking the train from Garmisch to Munich? What time does it leave? How close is it to the parade? When does it return to Garmisch? etc. Any information would be helpful. Thanks! Phil & Roberta Patterson. Missouri

Thank you for the information. This will be for the second parade which begins at 1000 sunday the 22nd of September. It sounds like it would be cutting it close time wise. We would like to be in the parade area by 8:30 that morning if possible.

There is an earlier train - leaves GaP at 7:04 and arrives at the Hbf at 8:27. There is also one train an hour earlier if you want to start that soon. The website says the Sunday parade starts at 10:00 near the Isar (river) and ends at Theresienwiese and takes 2½ hours, so if you just go down to Theresienwiese, you might no have to be so early (although you might want to to get a spot). If you use a Bayern-Ticket, you can take the S-Bahn (station under the street No. of the Hbf) down to Isartor (the old city gate near the Isar).

The German Rail (Bahn) website has complete schedules for trains in Germany. Use from: Garmisch-Partenkirchen Bahnhof and to: Muenchen Hbf (the website will prompt you for "München Hbf"). There is a Regional train (RB) leaving Garmisch at 8:04, getting to Munich Hbf at 9:27. If you purchase a Bayern-Ticket for 26€ for both of you, it will cover transportation for the entire day - the round trip train plus any transport in Munich. Since the parade is on a Saturday, there is no 9 AM restriction for using the Bayern-Ticket. The parade ends in Theresienwiese (Oktoberfest grounds), which is about a 10 min walk south from the Hbf. There is also a U-Bahn from the Hbf to just outside the grounds. Of course the train returns to Garmisch. Trains leave Munich hourly as late at 11:33 PM. The trip each way takes about 1½ hour.
