Leaving Paris by air we arrive at the Malpensa Airport at 4:30 p.m and need to get to Varenna. If there is train from the Malpensa Airport (and I do not know if there is) to Milano Centrale to take the train to Varenna - I am worrying that on a Sunday the train might not run late. Does anyone know the Varenna train schedule? And also is there a train to Milano Centrale from Malpensa Airport?
Jackie
Recently, Trenitalia has begun their train service from Malpensa to the Milan Centrale train station. Prior to this service, it was bus or taxi. The train to Milan Centrale runs at least once an hour (Sunday as well). Be cautious and note that there are two different train runs into Milan. One run goes to Milan Centrale and the other goes to Milan Nord Cordona and not Centrale. The train to Milan costs 7E. The other train costs 11E. However, when I put in Malpensa to Varenna on a Sunday, I see that the runs are mostly 2 hours apart. Fare is 12.75E and the travel time is 2hrs. You can see all of this on www.trenitalia.com. Select English. Type in Malpensa for the originating location.
Jackie, As the previous post mentioned, you should have no trouble getting from MXP to Varenna, even on a Sunday. The average length of that trip is about 2H:36M. There's a departure at 17:47, which is probably the most realistic one in your circumstances. From Milano Centrale, it's 1H:03M to Varenna. Be sure you have your luggage organized and you're ready to get off the train, as it only stops for about a minute! The train passes through a tunnel just prior to reaching the station in Varenna, so that will be a clue. Depending on which Hotel you're using in Varenna, you should be able to walk from the station. If you have a lot of luggage, a Taxi should be waiting at the station. Happy travels!
You could drive. It is only 70 miles. If you have parking at the hotel you have transport to see all the lake area.
