We are riding standby to Rome (airline employees) and may possibly be bumped off the Rome leg and will have to use Frankfurt or Zurich as a back up. Is anyone familiar with the train that would go from Zurich to Milano to Cinque Terre? How long and appx how much for a one way . All information would be greatly appreciated.
We went from Milano to Zurich last summer. It is a beautiful ride, I think it was in the range of four or five hours. But you can check it for yourself at bahn.de.
Immeasurably grateful!
Joyce,
Hopefully you don't get "bumped" off the Rome leg, as it's a bit of a trip from Zurich to the Cinque Terre. There are lots of trains in that direction, but using Monterosso al Mare as the destination (with an arbitrary date) the shortest trip I could find was 7H:18M with 3 changes. The easiest was 8H:01M with one change (Milano Centrale).
Hopefully you don't end up in Frankfurt as a rail trip from there is considerably longer (about 11-12 hours)! The closest budget flight I could find from Frankfurt was Air Berlin from FRA to FCO. From there is would still be about 5 hours via direct train to the C.T. (30 min or so on the Leonardo Express to Termini and then 4 hours on the train to La Spezia, plus waiting times of course).
Hope this helps.
Happy travels!
Depending on the train run you get, its 4.25hrs-6.0hrs. Arriving at Zurich Flughafen (airport), the train station is beneath the terminal. On the faster runs, you will need to change trains at Zurich HB (main station). Try for the Cisalpino 15 departing Zurich HB at 9:01 (local IC departs airport at 8:43) or Cisalpino 10017 departing Zurich HB at 11:09 (local IC departs airport at 10:43). Other runs are fine - they'll just take longer.
From Milan to the CT, you are 3.0hrs away.
WOW, super information. Thank you kindly!! Worse case I guess a night in Milano wont hurt and an early start to Cinque Terre in the a.m. our reservations are for the 29th and we are heading out the 27th just in case. Airline benefits are good to a point and planning for plan B is always Plan A.
Thanks again!!
Joyce, just for fun, ">CLICK HERE to see the early morning trains out of Milan for Monterosso (not sure where you were going in the CT).
Once again, ever so grateful, thank you for sharing your information w/ us. The three of us ladies are ready to enjoy Cinque Terre no matter how we get there! We have our Italian Dictionaries ready to use. Thanks again!
Joyce,
Be sure to try Pesto in the area where it was created. It tastes better there than anywhere else! There's also a good local (white) Wine, but I can't recall the name of it. Reportedly, bottles of the C.T. wine were found in Pompeii.
Buon Appetito e Ciao!
Thanks, we will try the pesto for sure!!! All this great information is adding to our excitement. It is not everyday I get to be the passenger going on the trip. Thanks again we are well equipped w/ all the info everyone of you has so kindly provided. Thank you so much, Arivaderci
