Train to Burg Eltz

Does the train stop at the Moselkern Station? I tried to get a train schedule from Rail Europe, but it does not recognize the Moselkern station.

For the real information on trains do NOT use the RailEurope timetables as they only give a hint - they want to sell the trains they can mark up so do not give the full story; go to the FAQs at the top of the Helpline menu, click on Planning your trip then click through to the Bahn. You will get all your answers there and we can help with specifics.

The regional bahn stops at Moselkern. The intercity trains don't. I don't use the rail Europe site but I've seen the complaint enough to suspect they don't show the regional (local train) schedules/routes.

RailEurope only shows the schedule for routes for which they want to sell tickets, usually with the fastest, most expensive trains. Apparently Moselkern is not on one of those routes. For complete schedule info, use the German Rail website. I suspect RE does show some of the trains to Cochem. From Cochem, there are northbound regional trains leaving Cochem every hour at 25 min after. They get to Moselkern 16 minutes later. There are also hourly trains from Koblenz, at 40 min past. They go to Moselkern in 30 min.

When using the German Rail (Bahn) website (the link I gave above), it will offer you several options - Cochem Bahnhof and Cochem (Mosel) - that's the same place. However, Cochem KD is not what you want, that's the KD dock on the river. Likewise "Moselkern" is what you want, the station. Moselkern KD is also the boat dock. "Moselanlage" is a park on the river in Moselkern.

Paul, As Lee and the others have mentioned, the bahn.de website is a far better source of information than the Rail Europe site. After arrival in Moselkern, I assume you're planning to take the hike to Burg Eltz? AFAIK, that's still the only option when arriving by train, although I used a Taxi when I was there last year. There are no Taxi firms in Moselkern, so pre-arranging would be necessary. I didn't pre-arrange, but was fortunate in that regard however that's a long story. The Taxi was a bit expensive, but on a hot day I felt it was the best choice. The Germany 2011 Guidebook has other transportation options listed, including Bus and Taxi from Treis-Karden. Happy travels!

Thanks again. Rick's fellow travellers are always helpful, and as I always experienced, the most courteous..
