I tried using the German train system to figure out how long it would take to get to Milan from Basel. How can I be sure I got the right Milan as 2 Milan's come up. I get about 5 hour trip.
When I get to Milan I need to get to Sirmione/Desenzano to start a bike tour, is that possible to figure out in advance?

Your're better off using the Swiss Rail site:

Direct EC trains from Basel to Milan arrive at Milano Centrale. If you book well in advance (up to 90 days) on the Swiss Rail site, you can get a discount fare as low as 25 CHF. The standard 2nd class fare is 109 CHF. To see timetables for your second route, go to the German Rail site. Enter Milano Centrale as your departure point and Desenzano del Garda/Sirmione as your arrival point.

Stew, To answer your original question, the shortest travel time from Basel to Milano Centrale is 4H:10M via direct train. If you use a train with one or more changes, the time is about 4H:43M. The trip from Milano Centrale to Sirmione / Desenzano is ~1H:25M depending on which train is used (second class fare €6.95 for most trains, although one has a price of €16.50). Cheers!
