Four of us are flying from the west coast to Marseille in late August and are planning on taking the train from Marseille to Avignon. My question is should I purchase tickets ahead of our travels or wait until we get to France? Also any recommendations between taking the TVG or the local train.

The ZOU! train is every hour from Marseille Airport and will get you to Avignon Centre in just over an hour. It is always the same price and does not need to be booked in advance as it is a regional train. ZOU! is the regional transportation authority for southeast France.
Are you taking the train from the Marseille Provence Airport to Avignon or from Marseille to Avignon?
If you are traveling from the airport, you will take a bus to the Vitrolles - Aéroport Marseille Provence station and then the train to Avignon. I would just load the SNCF app on your phone so you can check the schedule and buy a ticket either through the app or at a ticket machine when you arrive at the station.
