Hello, I am trying to buy a point to point ticket for travel from ljubljana to Vienna. I went to raileurope and they want me to pick a mailing option. We leave in 3 days so I am not sure whether that's the best option. I read this forum and it looks like others were able to buy with just a confirmation code. Can you tell me how I do it? Thanks,
Quan
Try booking on the Austrian Rail site.
The idea is to buy directly from the train operators rather than through RailEurope, an agency. However, the site for Austrian rail is rather cranky about supplying information on a train that starts in Slovenia, which is after all another country. You can try for yourself at http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp Note that you have to use the German spelling Wien. I managed to find their Internet fares from Wien/Vienna to Lj on several non-stop trains. Print-out tickets were not offered, but clients get a confirmation number to take to a ticket agent before departure. Running the reverse direction? No help with that. The Slovenia system does not appear to sell tickets for international routes but it is quite neat and clean to look at http://www.slo-zeleznice.si/en/passengers/slovenia The German service www.bahn.com, usually reliable for information even when it can't sell tickets, showed a number of trains from Lj to Wien but almost all seemed to require at least one change. The service is frequent, going to various parts of Vienna and at various durations. Maybe, having left it late, you will have to visit a station in Ljubljana as soon as you can to buy a ticket in person. Just to make it more infuriating, here is a YouTube video of what is represented as exactly the train you want to take http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqD7392s9LQ
Since I haven't actually done the trip I look forward to anyone more experienced posting better info.
Sorry to contradict Southam, but the Austrian Rail site does not show any non-stop trains for Ljubljana-Wien. And there are no direct trains listed either. all routes require at least one connection.
Thank you so much for your help. I tried to buy on Austrian web site last week, to no avail. It says that I can't do it since train originated from a foreign country. Perhaps we should hold off til we get to Ljubljana. Quan
