Train Ticket Type?

Homebase is Freiburg, Germany - traveling locally and day trips to Colmar, Strasbourg, Interlakken, other small towns nearby. Then start southern trip working way back to Frankfurt for flight home via Milan, Venice, Munich, Mainz. Traveling with another person. What is the best train pass to purchase? thanks for any ideas.

The word is Länder-Ticket. Länder (Laender) is the plural of Land, or state. (I've never understood why the singular is a "Länder-Ticket, not a Land-Ticket, but it's not my language. With her itinerary, it looked like she might go from Munich to Mainz in one leap. Länder-Tickets would not be cost effective for that kind of trip. A train specific, non-refundable Sparpreis ticket, purchased in advance online from the Bahn, for as low as €49 for two people, would probably be her best deal. On a weekend day, of course, a Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket would get her all of the way from Bavaria to Mainz for only €37 for two, on regional trains, no advance purchase necessary.

Those look like a lot of short trips. Most likely point-point regional tickets will be far more economical than a rail pass.

Also, w/in Germany, look at purchase of a Lander ticket these allow travel for several persons to places w/in same lander (read state) for a greatly reduced price.
Unless you are rolling in money and it is not a concern, rail passes are to be avoided
