I need to purchase overnight train tickets from Munich to Venice and then two seperate tickets within Italy. What is the best source for the Munich - Venice leg? Do I need reservations if traveling on a Monday night? Is a sleeper compartment worth the extra expense? Thanks!
The best place to book the Munich-Venice night train is the German Rail site, www.bahn.de. Click on the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner for English. Booked far enough in advance, you can get cheap discount fares for day couches, six-bunk couchettes, and four-bunk couchettes. Avoid the day couch. It's just a reclining seat. IMO, it's worth paying the difference between a six-bunk and a four-bunk couchette because of the extra space and comfort you'll have.
Reservations are required on all night trains. Trains on popular routes can sell out weeks in advance.
For trains within Italy simply go to a station and buy your ticket. Amica fares (20% discount) are offered for routes on many faster trains (not regional trains). If any of the allotted seats are available, those fares are sold up until midnight of the day before departure.
Thank you Tim! It seems that some ticket sources are better than others. There are so many options available - I really didn't know how to get started.
Thanks!
