Train Strategy to Switzerland and Italy

I’m looking for some help with train tickets and reservations. Our trip is flying in to Paris and immediately going to Colmar, Lausanne/Montreux, Interlaken/Lauterbrunnen, Venice, CT, and Milan. We will be on the ground in Europe from April 17 to May 1. There are three of us and we will travel exclusively on the train.

What I’d like to ask help for is the rail pass vs. point2point tickets and where to buy and how to make a couple of reservations ahead of time. Tim from Minot has been helpful on the Paris to Colmar tickets. I have priced out all our legs using the Rail Europe site. When I do that I have a $465 cost per person. I think we could use a flexipass saver 5 day/3 country pass. That cost is $376, BUT that does not include any supplements or reservations we will need to buy on top of that. I’ve estimated 5 segments that might require $15 each. That puts the comparison at $488 for the pass vs. $465 for p2p. We are planning to take the Golden Pass route from Montreux to Interlaken and get the VIP seats.

Here are my questions. Does that above calculation makes sense? It would point to buying tickets point to point. Is the Rail Europe site a good place to base cost? I think I’d like to buy only two train segments ahead of time. Paris to Colmar and Montreux to Interlaken and get the VIP seats. I’d like to get that now. Where should I buy that?

For any of you willing to think through my long set up and question, thank you for any comments. Pat

No, Rail Europe is not your best site for determining costs. RE rarely offers discount fares and it only shows timetables for trains for which it sells tickets. The best timetable site for virtually all of Europe is the German Rail site, www.bahn.de.

If I remember correctly, you liked my suggestion of taking a TGV directly from CDG to Strasbourg and changing there for a regional train to Colmar. Your other option is to go into Paris and depart from Gare de l'Est. If you book NOW at www.tgv-europe.com, you should be able to get discount fares for either route. If you want to leave directly from CDG, enter Airport CDG 2 TGV as your departure station. If you want to leave from Paris, simply enter Paris. To keep from getting a booking page in French and to avoid being bumped to the Rail Europe site, choose Great Britain as both your country of residence and the country in which you will retrieve your tickets. Don't worry. You will be able to pick up your tickets at any SNCF station in France.

Book your Golden Pass tickets here.

Thanks Tim. I would think that the point2point estimate would only get better, since it sounds like RE really doesn't show any discounts. Right? The German site is great for schedules, but can you get fares. I know you can't purchase on it.

Thanks for the the Golden pass site. I assume that I could purchase with credit card. I did have a hard time finding the trains that have the VIP seats. Can you suggest where that is?

Thanks for all your help for my questions and all your other post for various travel questions. Pat

On the Bahn site you can get fares and book trains solely within Germany and for many international trains that either start or end in Germany, but not for routes solely in another country.

To see the VIP layout, move your mouse pointer over the Products tab. Select Golden Pass Panoramic and then Layout of cars with VIP.

Not only does RE not show any discounts, but the tickets they sell are ALREADY overpriced. Never use RE in any kind of ticket cost comparison. Neither do they show all of the trains...only a certain subset of them.

If you visit Switzerland then you should really consider purchasing some sort of Swiss Pass product. If you visit just one or two of the high mountain rail private rail destinations (Jungfrau, Schilthorn, etc) then the Swiss Pass will get you a hefty discount.
