My wife and I will be flying into Budapest on May 19th. Want to spend a couple of days in Budapest then take train to Vienna. Stay in Vienna 2-3 days, then train to Munich May 27. How do I schedule trains? Is it possible to stay in Salzburg a day on way to Munich
Then you get to choose, purchase in advance and save 10 or 20 euro per ticket but be locked into a schedule or wait till you arrive in Budapest and buy the tickets at the station and have some flexibility. Especially after you discover a couple of days in Budapest isnt near enough.
www.oebb.at shows you all you need. You can save money if you can book well in advance and commit to specific trains. Alternatively, for the Vienna - Salzburg leg you can use the Westbahn (tickets are flexible, walk up price is €26,90, sometimes cheaper, cf. westbahn.at), and for the Salzburg - Munich leg a Bayern Ticket (valid on any regional train after 9 am, €25/1, €31/2, buy from a vending machine in Salzburg).
Thanks! exact information I was looking for. Found Hungarian MAV train site for trip from Budapest to Vienna
You can book the Budapest to Vienna on the oebb site as well if you want. Just out of curiosity i compared fares for tomorrow morning with fares for two months out and they were the same at 19 euro and up.
They cost more at the station, how much more i don't know, but you can buy online for a train the next day. Today's quote for tomorrow's train MAV has tickets listed online for 13 and 19 euro.
