Train Santa Margherita to Milan

Is there a train from Santa Margherita (or a town nearby) that would enable me to travel to Milan in order to connect with a Delta 75 on Oct. 27 that departs MXP at 10:45AM or do I have to travel a day in advance and overnight at the Milan Airport. If I have to overnight at Milan airport do you recommend a cheap hotel.

According to the timetables at www.bahn.de, there is a regional train that leaves S. Margherita Ligure at 04:57 and arrives at Milano Centrale at 07:40. Buses from the train station to the airport depart about every 20 minutes and the trip takes just under an hour. If you're flying home from MXP, it would be safer to be in Milan the night before. Regional trains don't always run on time.

Tim is accurate. Your time line is a little short and it would be smart to stay in Milan. The are many nice, reasonable hotels around the Central station and shuttle to the airport or stay around the Cudorna station and take the train which is about 30 minutes.

Thanks ever so much for your guidance. It looks as though I will have to take a train from Santa Margherita to Genoa and then change trains to travel Genoa to Milan. I tried to pull up train schedules but wasn't successful. While I realize the schedules change in June and I would be traveling via train on 10/27/09, think I have read where, generally speaking, the schedules are very much the same.

I'll book a hotel at the Milan airport as opposed to staying near the train station in Milan.

Again, thanks a million for your suggestions.

Susan, generally, its a "no can do" to spend the last night in the CT before going for a flight before 11:00am from Malpensa. Tim's 4:57am train is the one that will get you to Milan on time for your 10:30. But, it's the only one. The next train out of SM is 6:07am. You would be looking at about 1 hour to get through check-in at Malpensa if you have to take this run.

Thanks so much for your response. I've decided to overnight at a hotel near MXP so I won't have to concern myself with getting to MXP in order to get the 10:45 flight to ATL.
