Its a 12+ hour journey, with 2 to 3 changes, no matter how you cut it. There is a direct night train.
You can also check out discount airlines.

Marian, there is no single train that makes this run. Expect 12-14hrs and 1-3 train/bus changes for this journey. Some runs go via Bolzano and Innsbruck and some runs go via Venice and Villach. There is one run that puts you on the fast train to Venice-Mestre (not Venice Santa Lucia) where you transfer to a night train that does go to Vienna. You depart Mestre at 21:09 and arrive Vienna at 8:08am. Or, you can fly. www.airberlin.com can fly you there directly in 1:40 for under 100Euros. Air Berlin is a budget airline with strict weight and size limits. Go over and you pay extra. Carefully read their luggage rules. And, when they say one bay carry-on, they mean it. Purses are usually not extra.

Fly. As for the comment above regarding Air Berlin - this airline is really not considered a budget airline and doesn't have strict luggage/carry-on rules, such as RyanAir or EasyJet. I have flown Air Berlin and RyanAir numerous times and confirm this by experience. Air Berlin/Fly Niki is an excellent, no hassle way to go.
