Any suggestions as to which web sites to book train reservations as well as flexi passes. Eurail seems very expensive.
Rail passes will be the same price whether you use Eurail.com or raileurope.com, or any other similar site. The prices are set by the consortium of railways that issues the passes, led by SNCF in France. You can find some "passes" from individual countries for certain regions, etc, but it depends where you're going. Generally speaking, unless you plan to do a LOT of travelling by train, point to point tickets are probably the cheapest way to go, especially if you can take advantage of some of the lower-priced deals available on the web (usually with restrictions on changes and refunds). Let us know which countries you plan to visit, and we can help with info about which national rail websites to visit for ticket information and purchases.
Reservations, you have all kinds of choices; for passes, this website offers the same Railpass deals as any 'broker' but with a whole bunch of easy to access backup. ETTBD generally explains it better, are very easy to contact, and you're not dealing with the General Motors of European train-pass travel (like Eurail/RailEurope). Click on 'Railpasses' (above), if your questions not answered, call them.
