train reservation w/ eurail pass

Let's supposed I do not reserve a seat and just get on a train. What would happen if there ARE no seats available? Since the conductor doesn't check until after the train gets going, what would he do with me!?! I really dislike paying all these extra fees for reservations...I understand when reservations are required, I would face a fine...but if there are NO seats, and I am already aboard?

You didn't say what country or what type of train. In countries like German and Italy, for a regular IC, reservations are optional. If you don't reserve, and there are no seats, you stand. But on certain "premium" trains, like Italian EuroStar, TGV, and Thalys, it's not just a reservation, but a supplement to ride that train. Then you can't legally get on without paying the supplement.

I'm speaking only about Spain and Portugal here...when I check RailEurope for schedules, it looks like everything has a reservation fee. That's why I asked. I remember just jumping on a train in the past w/o paying extra (except for TGV, etc.). TY
