Traveling through Italy Dec 15 - 21; cannot tell from Eurail website if a reservation is needed for the 4 days we will be using the pass. I have the train name/number and dep times...will that help me determine if and how much the reservations costs? thanks
If it is an IC (InterCity) or ES (Eurostar) train, reservations are required in Italy. Only the R (regional) trains do not require reservations. I hope someone else can help with the cost as I don't know1
If you are`using the fastest trains, the ES Avia, then a 10 euro reservation is needed. For intercity, a reservation may be needed, and on some others a reservation is optional, in that case it may only be 3 euro. If all else fails, you can check the itinerary, an "R" means reservations are mandatory, or just ask at a ticket counter.
Some of the information in Paul's post is inaccurate. Reservations are now REQUIRED on IC trains and the fee is €3. I don't know of any Italian trains for which reservations are optional. Reservations are not possible on regional trains.
Tim is correct. And Eurail may not be your best site for that information. Try trenitalia.com
Thanks all. I have studied the trenitalia.com site; it seems they are doing some work on the site as it has come and gone this evening. For the 4 point to point trips i plan to make, it appears to be 127 euro for both my daughter and me, which compared to the 398 italy rail pass is a deal! i know i will have to pay for some local trains, but that shouldnt be too much. I am getting excited! But exhausted from the searching and the learning of these train sites.
