I was trying to determine if a rail pass (likely a two country select pass) would make sense for my upcoming itinerary and, if so, for how many days. In the process of doing so I ran into a weird scenario that made it difficult to decide. It appears that even if you are a first class pass holder you cannot make a first class reservation on the Gotthard Panorama Express, only second class with a pass or (very expensive) single ticket in first. Does anyone know why this is or a way around this? Obviously it makes the first class pass less appealing. My itinerary is as follows:
Day zero: flight out
Day one: Genoa to Monterosso
Days two-four: local travel within the CT and perhaps a day trip slightly beyond
Day five: to Bellagio
Day six: Lake Como area (likely ferries only)
Day seven: Bellagio to Lucerne via hydrofoil, train Como to Lugano and the Gotthard Panorama Express
Day eight: Lucerne and local area
Day nine: to Interlaken, Wengen or elsewhere in Berner Oberland, TBD
Day ten: day tripping in BO, TBD
Day eleven: to Bern
Day twelve: Bern to Zurich for flight home
Given how many days would require little or no travel beyond an inexpensive point to point ticket, obviously a rail pass for the whole time makes zero sense, but perhaps a four day pass for use on days 5, 7, 9 and 10 or 11 might make sense. But the aforementioned quirk of the booking is making the cost comparison and decision difficult, unless I just go with second class, definitely not preferred.
