I want to travel from London to Vienna. Should I purchase tickets in advance? Where should I purchase them? Train or plane recommended? I'll be traveling in September 2008.
It's a 16 hours train ride with 5 changes. Or it can be a 2 hours nonstop flight. And low cost air is definitely cheaper than any kind of rail ticket. Check airberlin.com, aua.com, ba.com, easyjet.com, ryanair.com (although they only fly to Bratislava/Pressburg which is around an hour from Vienna). Book as early as you can to get the really low rates from like €29 one way...
Do not take the train.
If the price of the flight from London to Vienna isn't quite what you want try Birmingham. It's only a couple of hours train out of London to Birmingham airport and Vienna is served out of the Birmingham Eurohub, prices can be quite a bit cheaper for mid-week, mid-morning or early afternoon travel.
Please please please - no not take the train.
Plane (and I'm the one who usually says night train, not this time though!).
FLY! we did it in Nov/Dec. Easy!
