Train or Fly from Venice to Vienna

I cannot look up train fares for June 24th or July 1st (flexible departure) from Venice to Vienna as the train sites says it's too early to book. Does anyone know approximately how much it would be during that time period for Sunday travel? I checked with both OEBB and Raileurope.

Thanks,

B

Bonnie,

I wouldn't suggest using Rail Europe for checking train schedules, as they typically don't show all solutions. Using the Bahn.de website and 24 June as the travel date, there appears to be a direct RailJet departing Venezia Santa Lucia at 09:55, arriving Wien Hbf at 17:35 (time 7H:40M). That train also stops at Wien Meidling prior to arrival at the Hbf. That solution is also shown for 1 July.

With advance purchase tickets, it may be less expensive than a flight and will most surely be a much more pleasant trip. When all is considered, there might not be much difference in travel time between the train and a flight.

That trip appears to be available now on the www.trainline.eu website for €29.00 PP! However there are conditions.....

"YM 1 International Sparschiene Italien Tarvisio: Strictly non-exchangeable and non-refundable."

Choose carefully before you hit the "Buy" button!

Hi,

Your trip from Venice to Vienna is doable by night train and day train, ie, night train Venice to Munich Hbf, arr. 06:10 hrs, transfer to Wien Hbf at your leisure, assuming you are not in a hurry, takes 4 plus hrs. That is the way I would do it.

If you have the time, take in the experience of riding an Italian/Austrian train. You will see first hand how to run a railroad. We have used Eurail passes in the past. Highly recommend the train. I would also advise checking The Man in Seat 61 website, it is a tremendous resource.

It's farther than most people realize between Venice and Vienna, and you have to go through the Alps. On the ground, you have to go from a train to bus to a train if you're going the shortest route. Otherwise, going up through the Brenner Pass to Innsbruck and east to Vienna is much farther.
I suggest taking Austrian Airlines which is the only air carrier making that route.

You will travel through some nice places on this journey. Why not spread the journey over two days? Train from Venice to Trieste and bus to Ljubljana and spend the night there. Then take the train the rest of the way on day 2.

David, you no longer need to make those connections. The direct RailJet services at 9:55 and 15:55 run daily through the mid-December schedule change.
