My adult daughter and I are staying about a half hour outside of Montpellier currently. We have committed to going to Barcelona for 48 hours. The car is the awkward part. To take the train, we would have to figure out where to park in Montpellier and add the costs to the total of train and parking, which is not inexpensive. I am inclined to drive to Barcelona but most people say this is a very bad idea. Wondering if there is an easy place to get to that is just outside of Barcelona but near a metro so that we could stow the car and then take transit into the heart of the city. We are staying near Las Ramblas so we really are in the middle of it! Train cost would be about $350. Gas and tolls if we drive would be about $170. Train would take longer. Parking in Barcelona will probably be about 26 Euros a day. What to do?!?! Any ideas appreciated!
This website has information on a lot of Park+Ride multiday facilities in Barcelona. They are integrated with the transit rail network. Check them out: prices vary from €7/day to € 35 for a whole week. DO drive from Montpelier to Barcelona. It is an easy, smooth ride on the highways. If you have extra time on your way in or out, I recommend taking off the highway in Figueres and going through the local, scenic route (N-260) that will pass through the cliffs near the Spanish-French border en Portbou. It is an amazing ride (provided you are not driving in peak July/August weekends, when it is jammed).

Andre, you are so wonderful! Thank you for your comprehensive and extremely helpful reply. I can now plan with confidence and this makes me feel so much better - to leave from Sommieres when I want is excellent. My daughter and I will take your advice and enjoy the scenery, too! All the best, Nancy
