We are staying 3 days in the Tuscany area, and will have a car while there. From there, we are going to Sorrento for 2 nights, and then back up to Rome for the remainder of our trip. Should we keep the rental car to get from Tuscany to Sorrento and back up to Rome, and turn it in when we arrive, or should we turn in the car somewhere in Tuscany, and take a train to Sorrento, and then a train from Sorrento to Rome? We have some concerns about how many times we would have to change trains and schlep our luggage, versus any difficulties driving.... any advise is much appreciated!!
You didn't say how much luggage you have, however, if you catch the ICE in Florence, you go all the way to Naples so there is only 1 on and off and on-and that's in Naples to the Circumvensuia. We did the train from Bologna in March and even tho we stopped in both Florence and Rome, it was quick and painless in 2nd class. You rally loose too much time driving from Tuscany all the way to Sorrento, along with the hassle of trying to park in Sorrento.
Conversely, you again change in Naples and end in Rome. Do train.
Agree, do train. As above poster said, when get to Naples just go downstairs to local train, last stop is Sorrento. Easy.
Rebecca, I agree with the others. Travel by train will be a faster and easier option, even if there are a few changes. The trips on the Freccia trains are fast and comfortable. Some of them travel at up to 300 kmH, much faster than a car! You can relax and enjoy the scenery, rather than keeping your eyes on the road. The Circumvesuviana is somewhat of an "old graffiti-laden clunker", but it will get you to Sorrento. Be sure you're wearing Money Belts and watch your luggage while travelling on it. I assume you're aware of the usual "caveats" regarding driving in Italy? If not, post another note for further information. Happy travels!
