We are a 6-member family: kids ages 12-19. We'll be there 4 days, in the Interlaken-Lauterbrunnen-Grindelwald area, having finished a week or two in Germany and Italy. Would using the transportation system make more sense, or a car? We're looking to relax and see the alps in a focused area.
You mostly have to use public transport (train, cable cars, buses) as cars aren't permitted in most of the mountain villages. Click the "railpasses" tab above for all the details on ways to save money in Switzerland. It also includes info on various discounts for children.
Kids < 16 years old travel free with their parents on ALL forms of Swiss Public Transport. Even when you go on those expensive private mountain railways to the Jungfrau or to the James Bond 007 revolving restaurant Piz Gloria high on the Schilthorn...the kids are still free. Definitely use public transport as many of the mountain villages wonderfully car-free.
Free travel for kids under 16 is for travel with a parent or grandparent. You need a Family Card, which is free if you are buying Swiss train passes yourselves. You will want passes to reduce the cost od the expensive lifts, so train makes more sense than a car. The trains and lifts are convenient and very easynto use, and will be fun for the kids.
Thanks so much
