I was planning to rent a car in Munich and drop it at Civitavecchia, but every rental agency I called had a huge drop charge. Therefore, I wanted to get a price to take the night train from Munich to Rome. I read that this could be done for 39 Euro. Does anyone know where I can get a cheap fare for the night train (inc. bed), or a car rental agency that doesn't charge a huge drop fee?
There are some Europa-Spezial Italien fares on day trains from Munich to some places in Italy (Venice, Verona, Bologna) for as low as €39, but these fares are only offered on direct connections (i.e., no change of trains in Italy) and there are no direct day trains to Rome. There is a CityNightLine train night train directly from Munich to Rome, but the lowest fare, a non-refundable, advance purchase fare, is €63 for a reclining chair in a small compartment with 4 or 6 people. If you want sleeping accommodations, a couchette or a sleeper, you pay extra for the accommodations.
See the German Rail website.
I believe that every car rental agency charges a high fee for picking up a car in one country and dropping it off in another. It might be cheaper to rent two cars. Drop the first one on the German side of the border, take a train into Italy, and pick up a second car there.
Unless you want to make frequent stops along the way, I think you'll be better off taking the train.
