We will be spending the week in Provence in early October, with a car. Should we drive to CDG or leave the car somewhere along the way and take the train?
We go to Provence quite often. If we are flying in to CDG we get the TGV to Avignon right at the airport. It avoids the hassle of driving anywhere around Paris. We rent the car right there at the TGV station in Avignon and it works great. If you are coming in to Provence from some other way (i.e. Nice) I would still recommend dropping the car in Avignon or you might even drive to Lyon and leave it there. The TGV from CDG to Avignon is wonderful - less than three hours and so comfortable.
Sandi - I just realized we will be in Provence at the same time. We have a villa for three weeks from 9/20 to 10/12 in the little village of St. Cecile les Vignes. Hope our weather is good!
Not enough information to answer this, really.
Have you checked to see if there are discounted rail fares for that day?
What's your whole itinerary? (since that could speak to whether a 2nd class French railpass would make sense & save you money).
Why are you driving to CDG when there are closer airports in Marseilles and Lyon?
If you want to spend a few days going north to Paris, doing a Michelin-style road trip and seeing sights along the way, then I think a car is the way to go.
If you just want to be at CDG at a particular time, I don't see how you can beat the direct Avignon-CDG TGV (except maybe with a flight).
But, it depends.
Instead of returning your car at CDG why not return it to Orly...much easier than driving the Periferique around Paris. Are you going to be in Paris after Provence? Then it would be easier to return it and to get it at Orly. We will be in Isle sur le Sorgue from the 11th of October to the 20th.If you need places to stay on the way back to,Paris we have some neat places. Send me a message.
