The most stress-free way to get from Heathrow to Bath is to take National Express bus from Heathrow. You may also want to consider flying into Bristol International Airport. There are non-stop flights from JFK & Newark Airports to Bristol. At Bristol you would the free shuttle bus to Bristol Temple Meads rail station (7 miles away), from there you take a train directly to Bath about a 15 minute journey-two stops away. Bath is easily walkable, and two nights is best.

It's entirely up to you how you get to Bath. The Train is quicker but likely to cost more. The bus is slower, cheaper and the journey is dull. If cost is an issue - I'd take the bus. Bath is not a large city. All the big tourist sights are within walking distance in the city. Definitely book two nights accommodation, there is enough to see in Bath that you will be leaving plenty still to do if you ever go back. Why not take a guided, open top, bus tour on your first day. Make a note of the places that really interest you and visit them on foot the next day.
